Top quality car with excellent competition history. Very reluctant sale but I just don’t have the time to do it justice with other commitments. The car was built and has been maintained and improved by the best in the business. This car has won several rallies outright including the East Anglian Classic and Huntsman Rallies. Also, 7th o/a on Hero’s LeJog (2013) and 8th o/a on the Winter Challenge to Monte Carlo (2014). It’s a potentially winning historic car in the right hands and recently sailed through it's annual MOT.
The car was originally built by TR Enterprises (notable TR4 specialists) in 1994 for Paul Merryweather to compete on historic rallies. I bought the car from Bill Wyatt in 2013 who had improved it steadily with great attention to detail in the decade it was in his care. Since then, much of the maintenance and further improvement work has been undertaken by TRE but with other specialists too. It has a full roll cage and, notably, a very rare ex-works alloy hard top (with a second steel hard top).
The engine is a fully balanced 2188cc unit with fully worked cylinder head (recently new), Racetorations rally cam and twin Weber 45’s with TGI foam filters. It has been tuned on Peter Burgess’s rolling road at 154hp but is primarily built for torque as a rally engine – not a race screamer. The gearbox is 4sp with OD on gears 2, 3 and 4 by way of a quick-acting big-piston OD unit and logic box. TRE also fitted an uprated radiator (inc electric fan with override) and high torque starter and it has been fitted with the heavy duty TRE steering rack following several competitors having recently suffered standard steering rack failures due to fatigue. Of course, an oil-cooler is fitted and an alloy sump guard.
The car has an alloy FIA foam-filled fuel tank and dashboard switchable twin electric fuel pumps with filters. TRE also fitted dual circuit front/rear brake master cylinders. The suspension and brakes are well built and sorted (as well as can be within historic rules) with negative camber upper arms plus a front anti-roll bar and uprated units all round. The rear diff is an LSD unit. The chassis is in good condition and has been fully Terroson WX waxed underneath (inc cavities) by TRE.
It sits on Minilites with a selection of tyres for various conditions. The car also has a frame on which to sit a second spare on the boot lid for longer distance events. When I bought the car in 2013, the electrics were fully checked and improved by TRE with a competition alternator and later type switchgear fitted inc 2-speed wipers and heated front screen. The car is wired for front Cibie spotlights.
In the cabin, there are part-leather sports seats professionally modified for 5 point FIA 3in belts and a Momo steering wheel plus extra dials, warning lights and switches, as would be expected. There is a centre-mounted fly-off handbrake. For the navigator, there is a Terratrip 303 with separate clock and stopwatch (both with remotes) and at least 2 flexible rally lights with extra 12v power points and storage. There is a mechanical extinguisher system built in with the cylinder sitting under the navigator’s footrest.
All in all a really nice looking, reliable, fast, well-sorted and enjoyable car that has finished every event I’ve entered – and finished well. It’s now ready to give a new owner years of pleasure and success on historic events.
