Stunning Group 4 Mk2 Escort ‘RS1800’ historic spec, built from a very clean and solid 1980 shell to full historic specification by Bob Dowen Rally Services. No replacement panels were used to build this car – the originals were perfect. No expense has been spared on this car, with all modifications carried out and parts fitted to historic specification.
Built by Bob Dowen, the bodyshell is fabricated to the highest standards and to full Group 4 specification, including seam welding and strengthened with gussets; chassis skids; strengthened bulkhead and alloy firewall. The shell is fitted with a large gearbox tunnel and right and left-hand exhaust tunnels, with rear axle location fabricated for 6 linked axle with long 4 link bars and Watts linkage; tall round turrets; Group 4 World Cup Cross Member; Ralloy strut brace; large radiator mounts and jacking points. The bodyshell is fitted with Ralloy tarmac arches (front and rear) and front spoiler along with an FIA approved Safety Devices bolt in cage, complete with rear diagonals and door bars. Shell is finished in Diamond White, with a satin black interior – boot, bonnet and doors are all steel.
Fitted with British Championship/ FIA historic spec Sherwood 2.0 BDG engine – freshly dyno’d (260bhp/ 180lbsft) – built to ‘championship’ spec. Twin 48 Webers with works type throttle linkage fed via twin facet fuel pumps and filter king, with Sherwood air filter and Simpson exhaust manifold; Lumenition electronic ignition and Cosworth type leads with Bosch distributor. Ark racing starter motor and 90 Amp alternator. Engine is dry-sumped, with BDG Ralloy dry sump tank and cooled by a Ralloy Group 4 period radiator and cooling fan. The engine bay is fully protected by a large alloy sump guard.
Car is fitted with the excellent heavy duty Tracsport/ Quaife 4 speed gearbox with alloy main case and 2.2 1st gear driving through a single piece propshaft to a fully floating twin taper narrow Atlas axle, with 4.6 crown wheel and pinion and ZF Motorsport LSD and heavy-duty half shafts and flanges, alloy diff guard and brace. The quick release alloy bell housing houses an AP Racing twin plate paddle clutch. The rear axle is 6 linked.
Brakes, Suspension and Steering
Car is fitted with Group 4 adjustable Bilstein front struts complete with 300/70 inserts, 250lb springs and roller bearing top mounts, with Rix Group 4 alloy front hubs, and double width kit and heavy-duty anti-roll bar. Group 4 turreted coilover Bilsteins are fitted to the rear with 170lb springs. Brakes run through a Group 4 adjustable bias pedal box and fly off hydraulic handbrake, with AP Racing brakes fitted to the front and rear, with Monte Carlo 4 pot calipers and vented discs fitted to the front and 2 pot calipers (footbrake and handbrake) and solid discs fitted to the rear. Steering is via a Quaife heavy duty, 2.5 turns quick rack with Group 4 knuckle.
Inside the car runs a custom-built wiring loom with Elliott and Racetech gauges fitted, using an electric Cartek cut-off and electrically operated and plumbed in fire extinguisher plus handheld. Car is fitted with a heated front screen with polycarb side and rear windows. OMP WRC-R seats are fitted, with TRS 6-point lightweight harnesses and Luisi steering wheel (seats; belts and extinguishers are all new). Goodrich fittings and Aeroquip hoses have been used throughout, along with Ralloy alloy fuel and dry sump tanks. Car sits on 8×13”/ 9×13″ Revolution Group 4 wheels – inserts, wheel studs and nuts.
No expense has been spared with the build of this car, and only high quality, tried and proven parts were used. The car is log booked, has Motorsport UK historic papers and is ready to go, for full championship events; the popular ‘historic demo’ events in the UK and Europe; and elsewhere.
