We are very pleased to offer this very special 1970 Chevron B19 chassis "70-S-10" for sale.
70-S-10 is the prototype B19 built in the late summer of 1970 using the repaired and modified chassis from B16-DBE-10 which had been entered by the factory for the 1970 Nurburgring 500 Kms but was crashed in practice by Dieter Quester in its one and only race appearance.
This race also saw the debut of the Brian Redman inspired B16S-01 spider. When asked for suggestions as to how to make the B16 coupe quicker and more competitive against the new spider Lola T210, Brian replied, “make it look like a Porsche 908/03” and hence the spider-bodied B16S was born. The new body design proved an instant success, so a proper B19 prototype, using the chassis from B16-DBE-10, was built by Derek Bennett in the cornered-off section of the Bolton factory which served as his “secret special projects” workshop, hence the “S” designation of this car. This was also where the B16S, the later 3-ltre B27S and the B41 Formula 1 car were built and developed.
This B19 is exceptionally well documented with continuous ownership from new. It has good early in-period race history (see below) and is offered for sale in fully restored, race-ready condition with a low hours Geoff Richardson FVC engine, rebuild FT200 box, new fuel cell, current (2013 issued) FIA HTP and a decent spares package.
This special "B19 prototype" is an important part of Chevron's history and is very usable in multiple race series (Masters, CER, ADAC FHR, etc.) where it is a welcome and competitve entry ready to give its new owner a lot of enjoyment.
“70-S-10” was initially sold to Bobby Rinzler of Atlanta, Georgia but the order was cancelled and instead the car went to the Chevron agent for Europe, Jo Siffert Automobiles of Freiberg, Switzerland. The B19 was initially leased to French racing driver and hillclimber Cyr Febbraio who used the car in French national championship events during 1971. In 1972 Cyr bought the car outright and its moment of glory came at Paul Ricard in 1972, in the opening round of the European championship with hillclimb champion Jimmy Mieusset in a rare race appearance. Up against brand the new cars from Abarth, Lola and Chevron, Mieusset kept his head down and as the new cars fell by the wayside, Jimmy and “70-S-10” finished 2nd overall.
In 1973 “70-S-10” was sold to French hillclimber Jean-Marc Guimelli who used the car for a couple of years before selling it to French race preparer Jean-Pierre Damias of Le Vesinet. In 1978 the car passed to Gerard Billaud of Perpignan. It was then sold to Alain Filhol in April ‘94 who sold the car on to historic racer Martin Birrane in April ’95 as a rolling chassis. Raced intermittently by Birrane in historics “70-S-10” was sold in 2005 to Allen Timpany in the UK who raced the car in historics until 2009. The car was then sold to the present owner in December of that year and “70-S-10”, the original B19 prototype, has continued to be raced in European historic events by the current owner.
