I have recently finished a nut & bolt restoration of my 1961 Turner Modified Sportscar with which I won the 1978 BRSCC Modsports Class C Championship and the David Bowler Award for being overall runner-up in the Championship. She is now eligible for the new HSCC 70's Modsports series that has pilot races this year. Engine has been run in and she just has one or two small jobs to finish to allow her to compete again.
The car is well known and has an excellent history. I hand built it from a 1961 chassis in 1978 when I returned from racing in the Indy Region SCCA.
The car is totally period correct and has a fully rebuilt original type Ford pre-crossflow 1500 which is dry sumped, balanced and bored/honed, with new pistons and rings (circa 150bhp), new 244 camshaft, duplex vernier timing chain and sprockets, upgraded rocker shaft, big valve cylinder head with twin 40’s and special air filters, special 4 into 1 manifold and matched silencer. Twin AP sintered clutch and ultra-lightweight flywheel (spare sintered clutch and lightweight flywheel in the huge load of spares), fully rebuilt 2000e SCR gearbox, original type Sprite Axle with rare 3.7 Riley diff (gripper fitted) and uprated halfshafts, new alloy fuel tank with new fuel pump, GT6 front suspension and new brake calipers. Rebuilt front shocks with new springs. Spax rear shocks with new springs too.
It has its original hard top and original Turner sliding windows in alloy frames (also original) and plexyglass windscreen in its original frame.
Original dynamo (the electrics have been converted to alternator but dynamo included with the spare parts), Hi torque starter motor, new light battery, spare distributors, crankshafts, rocker shafts, connecting rod sets (original 1500, twin-cam and 1300 sets), spare refurbished wishbones and other suspension parts, 3 pre-crossflow cylinder heads, 2 of which have been ported and modified, spare half-shafts, fully removable front end bodywork with Mould to replicate it if necessary. It has period Revolution 10x13" wheels and good Pirelli slicks. It weighs about 465kg ready to race and is the lowest Turner I have built (and certainly the best handling of the 9 Turners I have owned, 5 of which have raced in Modsports). A spare 1460cc (1300 block bored out to 85mm) fully rebuilt block with 2 spare cylinder heads, one of which is being rebuilt and will be a full race head.
I have literally hundreds of photographs of both the original build and the current 3-year restoration. It comes with lightweight trailer, a massive amount of spares and parts including a freshly bored 1300 block with square main bearing caps, 85mm powermax pistons (three cylinder heads - 2 of which are fully ported, cranks, rods pistons, new sets of valve springs, etc. etc.) and certainly enough with which to complete spare full race engine, which might well be built by the time she sells.
The car is being fully rewired, with new brake lines, full fire extinguisher system, double width alloy radiator (Air is vented over the bonnet), electronic ignition, etc. Just finished being fully checked over and finished by a professional race preparation workshop near my local race circuit.
Period correct and virtually as it was built in 1978, but all parts either replaced with new (many upgraded but original type) or rebuilt. It is currently being painted in its original black livery.
I have rebuilt the Turner by hand and using hand tools as I did in 1978, although this time, I used a cordless drill instead of the original hand cranked drill. I have no metal bending or other modern tools, so my hands and hand tools have been used and the car has retained its total originality. A full set of photographs since the car was built will be given to the new owner.
Many original panels have been retained and restored and the existing roll cage uprated with added door bars and back stays (MSA confirmation that the car does not have to comply with the new roll cage regs, as it is pre-1st January 1962, so fully legal). Tillet seat on alloy base, with spare seats in the package. Fully adjustable bias brake system with front and rear on separate new lines, new OMP harness, new venturi and front end modified to give better ground effects, but all within Period silhouette and original Modified Sportscar regulations. I have my original V5, although the car has been converted to track use only.
I live in Northern France, but can deliver to UK/EU. Can accept GBP or Euros in payment and might take part exchange, especially a nice Camper van or boat, as failing health is forcing me to retire after over 55 years racing. I will help the new owner in any way I can, as I know every nut and bolt on the car. She is great to drive.
