Ford Escort Mk1 Twin-Cam

To Be Auctioned

Description

Ford Escort Mk1 Twin-Cam – This is a fabulous, UK-supplied Mk1 Escort Twin-Cam, featuring a fresh coat of Ermine White and distinctive ‘bubble arches’.

Historical Background

By 1968, Ford had embraced the marketing strategy of ‘Win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ and needed a new race or rally version to succeed the Lotus Cortina. Ford’s Boreham-based Competition Department developed a Lotus-powered Escort, called the Twin-Cam, which excelled on the race and rally circuits. It won countless events and secured the World Rally Championship Manufacturers Trophy in its first year of production, repeating the feat the following year.

Features

  • Distinctive ‘bubble arches’
  • Reinforced Type 49 bodyshell
  • Wider wheel arches
  • Quarter bumpers
  • Uprated suspension
  • Front disc brakes

Technical Specifications

The Twin-Cam was powered by a Lotus-designed eight-valve twin-camshaft head mated to Ford’s 1.5-litre pre-crossflow block, bored out to 1,558cc. It produced around 110bhp, drove through a 2000E gearbox, and was capable of 115mph. Only 883 Twin-Cam models were produced before the BDA-powered RS1600 took over in 1970.

Provenance and Condition

This particular Mk1 Escort Twin-Cam benefits from a new coat of Ermine White paint. It was first registered on 9th November 1970, with the V5C indicating three former keepers. It comes with a history file, including a Twin-Cam Escort owner’s handbook, invoices, and correspondence with the AVO Owners’ Club.

Potential and Value

This Escort would be a valuable addition to a Blue Oval Collection or for spirited weekend drives, offering a chance to relive its glory days. Offered at a competitive estimate compared to previous sales, this represents an intriguing opportunity to acquire one of Ford’s most celebrated performance models.
