Description

Peugeot 309 GTi 16v Supercharged ‘Maxi’ Rally Special – Simply astonishing and perhaps a little ‘bonkers’. Superbly engineered, road-legal, 370bhp, supercharged, Peugeot 309-based road-rocket.

What if you owned a 309 GTi back in the late 1990s/early 2000s and were now an ex-Prodrive engineer who had studied motorsport engineering, with an unlimited budget to create your ultimate 309 ‘Maxi’? This car is that reality.

It started life as a 1989 Peugeot 309 GTi, and was actually owned by our vendor as a young man; charmingly, it was subsequently rediscovered and bought for him by his friends as a wedding present. Having got it back, it was to become something of a pet-project for all his acquired knowledge, experience and motorsport connections.

Let the facts / stats do the talking:

  • 3-year build time with no expense spared, prepped by race workshop in UK; circa £100,000 invested to create possibly the best example of a 309 ‘Maxi’ in existence
  • Road-legal with a new MOT, professionally stored and only used in dry conditions
  • Lightweight custom composite bodywork including carbon-fibre roof, welded-in full roll cage, tubbed front arches and strengthened chassis
  • Motorsport-derived 306 16-valve engine with a forged bottom end, rebuilt with only 70 ‘shakedown’ miles, running on race fuel; custom engine mounts, aluminium lightweight adjustable pulleys, aluminium radiator and intercooler, custom inlet manifold, Rotrex supercharger (custom installation); 370bhp / 910kgs
  • Custom fuel tank with ATL fuel cell
  • Carbon/Kevlar sump guard
  • Made-to-order rally wheels from Italy (plus 2 spare wheels with tyres, never used) with tarmac rally tyres
  • ‘Group A’ suspension throughout with custom rose-jointed front arms and rose-jointed steering
  • AP brake-bias adjustor, AP floor-mounted pedal box, AP 6-pot front calipers, AP twin-pot rear calipers
  • Omex engine management with launch control
  • Xtrac differential with strengthened custom drive shafts
  • Custom short-shift rose- jointed gear selector
  • Custom exhaust system with Group B rally back box
  • Plumbed-in electric fire extinguisher, electric isolator, race battery
  • Lightweight bucket seats and 6-point harnesses, Alcantara lightweight steering wheel, intercom system, electric and fly-off handbrake, adjustable bias

This is a one-off car, and a one-off opportunity to acquire something very special that would be the envy of any track-day, hill-climb, Scramble or car-meet. With both form and function, this race-car-for-the-road is worthy of any car collection, and will outperform more established machinery (Porsche GT3 we’re talking to you!). In a world of more and more sanitised, restricted and conformist cars, this is the ultimate expression of what can be done to make a car as much fun as is surely possible. Any inspection is welcome, you will not be disappointed.
